In 2020, I signed up to be on the planning committee for the YMCA Crenshaw’s holiday toy drive. Little did I know, this experience would not only change my life but ignite a lifelong passion for helping raise funds and plan community events.
For my birthday that year, I raised money to go toward my charity initiatives, amplifying the work I was doing during such a challenging time. The generosity I received was overwhelming, and it fueled my drive to do even more for those in need. What also made 2020 so special was the support of my friends who donated Target gift cards and toys. It was incredible to see everyone come together to help make the event a success.
Being a part of the planning committee, I dedicated two and a half months to preparing for the event, including weekly Zoom calls, shopping, coordinating, and organizing toys. Throughout this time, we also strategized how to safely host the event during such challenging circumstances.
The YMCA Crenshaw team created an innovative and safe drive-through toy drive passing out 10,000 toys that brought much-needed joy to families. Some families waited in line for 3-6 hours, a testament to the great need within the community. The event also featured snow, performers, santa clause and food. It was a truly special event.
Looking back at that event, learned so much throughout the process— and I’m thankful for the opportunity to contribute to something that made such a difference in the lives of so many families.
