Cold Showers & Deep Breathing: I Started the Wim Hof Method

“The purpose of being is really making the soul ascend, to expand consciousness. That’s our true purpose. And if we follow that path then there is no tension. You just live like a kid, open. It’s all simple. It’s beautiful and the energy is clean. We are children of mother nature.”

Wim Hof

And just like that.. the world was hit with a novel coronavirus!

We were excited for spring break and festival season including Ultra, Coachella and Electric Daisy Carnival. And do not forget about our planned European summer trips that consisted of drinking bottles of rose and dancing on top of tables in Mykonos.

Now, we are quarantining and social distancing, for the next weeks to months or until there is a vaccine. America has pretty much shut down their entire economy. People have lost their jobs. Domestic violence is on the rise. Tens of thousands of Americans have lost their lives. 233,807 deaths worldwide to this date. My ex’s father got the virus and passed away a few weeks ago. It just has been tragic.

However, In all dark times, there is always light. In this instance what I have learned, so far, is that this is the best time to self reflect, go inward on what truly matters to you. I always talk about life being short and this situation has really shown me just how really short it can be. I am grateful for my freedom to explore this world and interact with other humans. I have been quarantining for the past 56 days solo which gives a lot of (well, almost too much) time to think. Think about who I want to be, what I want to build, and with whom I want to surround myself with going forward.

I also decided it is time to build a stronger immune system since I get sick easily.  I decided to start the Wim Hof Method which consists of cold therapy and deep breathing exercises.

The Three Pillars of The Wim Hof Method

Cold Therapy

“The cold is your warm friend and one of the three pillars of the Wim Hof method. Proper exposure to the cold starts a cascade of health benefits, including the buildup of brown adipose tissue and resultant fat loss, reduced inflammation that facilitates a fortified immune system, balanced hormone levels, improved sleep quality, and the production of endorphins— the feel-good chemicals in the brain that naturally elevate your mood.”

Breathing

“The second pillar of the Wim Hof method is breathing. We’re always breathing, yet we’re mostly unaware of its tremendous potential. Heightened oxygen levels hold a treasure trove of benefits, and the specialized breathing technique of the Wim Hof Method unearths them all: more energy, reduced stress levels, and an augmented immune response that swiftly deals with pathogens.”

“The breath knows how to go deeper than the mind.”

Wim Hof

Commitment

“The third pillar of the wim hof method is the foundation of the other two: both cold exposure and conscious breathing require patience and dedication in order to be fully mastered. Armed with focus and determination you are ready to explore and eventually master your own body and mind.”

The benefits of combining all three are:

In addition to the Wim Hof Method, I am started The Artist Way again with 3 pages of writing in the morning, prayer, healing meditations, and listening frequency music to name a few. I just wrote a post “My Morning Quarantine Routine!” with more ideas that you can add to your morning routine.

The Coronavirus is affecting all parts of our lives. Making us weak in some ways but stronger in others. If we all decide use this time wisely and work on inner cleansing and renewal, we will come out mentally stronger on the other side and more grateful to be alive. As Wim Hof stated in the first quote, we are all children of mother nature- and God. We must respect mother nature and the deep lessons this vicious virus is bringing to us all! I have already learned a lot from this and will post more in another blog post. Always remember, in the cold there is warmth!

Have you heard of the Wim Hof Method? I would love for you to join me on this challenge of deep breathing exercises and cold showers!
