Cartagena, Colombia, is a vibrant city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and tropical charm. Known for its beautifully preserved walled city, colorful colonial architecture, and Caribbean vibes, Cartagena is a must-visit destination in South America. I traveled to Cartagena for my friends’ wedding and spent a few days exploring this magical city. Here’s my guide to the top activities and experiences you won’t want to miss in Cartagena.

1. Wander Through the Walled City (Old Town)

The walled city is the heart of Cartagena and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you walk through its narrow streets, you’ll be surrounded by stunning colonial buildings, colorful balconies, and vibrant street art. Highlights include:

  • Plaza Santo Domingo: A lively square surrounded by cafes and the iconic sculpture by Fernando Botero, La Gorda Gertrudis.
  • Plaza de los Coches: Once a slave market, this plaza is now filled with local vendors and beautiful arches.
  • Las Bóvedas: Originally built as dungeons, these archways are now home to shops selling local crafts and souvenirs.
