A Chef’s Tour Chiang Mai is a 16 tasting menu food tour hosted by Moui who has lived in Chiang Mai for over 20 years. If you are looking for tradition Thai dishes like pad Thai, spring rolls or yellow Thai curry then this is not your tour. Moiu takes you to hidden spots including night markets with dead carcasses hanging from the ceiling and bags of blood for soup. Feeding you and teaching you all about Northern Thai cuisine, which I found intriguing and delicious. If there is one thing that I discovered about the Thai’s of Northern Thailand is that they have a love for eating pork and the most interesting parts of animals including brains and raw minced meat with blood.
We started off the food tour with the famous Cowboy Hat Lady who was featured on an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. She is known for her Khao Kha Muu (porks leg) that is slowly stewed in a sweet sauce and packed with Chinese five spice flavor. Delicious! We then went to 6 different spots sampling various foods.. even durian, which is considered one of the world stinkiest fruits. I did however skip out on the chicken blood soup; that is where I had to draw the line. This tour is not for vegetarians, vegans or picky eaters. This tour is for the Anthony Bourdain’s out there who are adventurous eaters and have a love for the road and food less traveled.
